This copperheaded racer snake in Thailand is a bit deceiving. It looks like it's not going to strike, all the sudden it launches itself 1 meter toward you and strikes furiously at you. Really cool snakes. They bend their bodies and puff up their heads and necks vertically, not horizontally like a cobra.

Special Report for Andaman News NBT (VHF dial) + Radio Thailand FM90.5 at 8.30am & perhaps repeats on Phuket Cable TV channel 1 at 7pm & 1am, broadcast to Phang Nga, Krabi & Phuket provinces & maybe Mazz Radio FM108 at 7pm in Phuket,Tuesday 6 January 2009 & http://thainews.prd.go.th/newsenglish/ & www.YouTube.com/AndamanNews.com Send comments to AndamanNews@yahoo.com A way of life, cultures, civilization from the past and a memory of the historical disaster of the Tsunami in 2004 are collected together and formed up as Baan Din or House made from earth, at Ban Nam Kem village in Phang-Nga province for visitors to see. You can find out more from our special report today: From an ordinary worthless soil to a beautiful harmonious house complimenting the nature and its atmosphere, a simple house was built with a combination of glue and soil. The houses soil bricks are overlapping each other in a neat manner, strong and environmentally friendly. It became a learning centre and also a new tourist attraction for the fishing village of Baan Nam Kem Community. Maitree Jongkrairak, Baan Nam Kems Coordinator, told us more: Baan Din, or what the villagers of Baan Nam Kem would call a Cultural Centre and Tsunami Museum, was built from thoughtful minds on how to preserve the traditional life and historical cultures of the people in Ban Nam Kem, in Ta Kua Pa district, of Phang-Nga. There were five special theatres for famous traditional Shadow Puppet Shows or in Thai called Sherd Nang Taloong which have now turned into five exhibition rooms in Baan Din. These five memorable rooms represent different memories starting from the first room describing the museums background. The second room represents a Tsunami Memorial, shows historical lives, and an explanation of how a Tsunami happens, with how people survived in the ocean. It also exhibits wall portraits reflecting the life of fisherman in Ban Nam Kem, which were drawn by artists from the Andaman Group. The third room is filled with a story of a blue fishing boat Krishana-Sakorn which was called a blue angel boat by villagers because it saved many lives including the life of a three year old child during the Tsunami attack. But this one in the fourth room, an orange color trawler is called the Killing Choke-Siriporn 9 which killed many lives during the Tsunami attack. The last room shows the rise of a mining industry in the past that linked to present age. Every Ban Din unit was built to last for 150 years and is waiting for tourists to visit them. In the near future, the Activities Coordinating Centres of Ban Nam Kem Community and Tsunami Victim Network will develop the surrounding nature areas into a tourist attraction in a very cultural manner. They will have buildings consisting of rooms, conference seminar rooms and accommodation simulating the lifestyle of Ban Nham Kem Community and Traditional Sea Gypsies way of life. The centre will remain as a learning centre about nature for generations to come.

This is the Naples, Pompei and mt. Vesuvius trip with Fr. Bao Thai, Quan Tran and Paul (me!). After walking around Naples for a whole day, we went southwards to Pompei to see the ruins of the once glorious city. The City of Pompei was buried under ashes when a volcano errupted causing the whole city to perish. Pompeii is a ruined and partially buried Roman town-city near modern Naples and Caserta in the Italian region of Campania, in the territory of the comune of Pompei. Along with Herculaneum, its sister city, Pompeii was destroyed, and completely buried, during a long catastrophic eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius spanning two days in AD 79. The volcano collapsed higher roof-lines and buried Pompeii under many meters of ash and pumice, and it was lost for nearly 1700 years before its accidental rediscovery in 1748. Since then, its excavation has provided an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city at the height of the Roman Empire. Today, it is both one of the most popular tourist attractions of Italy, with 2,571,725 visitors in 2007. Quite impressive, eh?

Wat Phra Kaew (วัดพระแก้ว), the Temple of the Emerald Buddha, and the adjoining Grand Palace together form perhaps the greatest spectacle for the visitor to Bangkok. Despite the fact that the whole compound is so full of tourists you spend half the time trying to avoid getting in people's photos, it's still a pretty amazing place to visit. It consists of over 100 brightly colored buildings, golden spires and glittering mosaics, and dates back to 1782, when Bangkok was founded. When you enter the compound, you first of all see Wat Phra Kaew and the nearby attractions, and then move on to the Grand Palace afterwards. Wat Phra Kaew itself, generally known to the Thais as Wat Phra Si Rattana Satsadaram, is perhaps the main attraction. This is Thailand's most important and sacred temple, so you're expected to act with due respect inside it. It houses the tiny (between 60 and 75 cm) Emerald Buddha, which is located high above the heads of the worshippers and tourists. Not much is known for certain about the statue, except that it isn't actually made of emerald but rather of green jade or jasper. Getting a good look at it is difficult as photography is forbidden inside the temple, and it's perched so high up inside it's glass box that it's difficult to really see. It's thought to have been made in the 15th century and was the cause of several wars before ending up for good in Bangkok in 1782. The image is considered a talisman and holds tremendous significance for Thailand and the Thais. The 'robe' that it wears is changed 3 times each year by the King himself, at the start of each season: A diamond encrusted gold robe during the hot season, a solid gold robe in the cool season and a gilded monk's robe in the rainy season. There are also many other Buddha images inside the temple. Round the interior walls are murals depicting the jataka stories. These are located according to the typical Thai conventions inside temples. The ones facing the altar depict the victory of the Buddha over the evil demon Mara, as he subdues her and achieves enlightenment. As is normal for Thai temples, shoes must be taken off before entering into the temple. Despite it's national importance, Wat Phra Kaew is the only temple in Thailand that doesn't have any resident monks, and so is not a seat of Buddhist learning in the same way as the likes of Wat Pho and Wat Mahathat. A cloister surrounds the temple, and depicted along here is an extensive mural of the Ramakian, the Thai version of the famous Indian epic, the Ramayana. In total there are 178 sections, and although they date from the reign of King Mongkut (Rama IV 1825-1850) they have since been restored on numerous occasions. The explanatory texts across from each were devised by King Chulalongkorn (Rama V). Also in the compound is: - A miniature model of the famous Cambodian temple complex Angkor Wat, made during the reign of King Mongkut (Rama IV) when the Thai empire extended over Cambodia. - Two libraries, built to protect copies of important Buddhist literature. The Phra Mondop library is impressive, but almost always closed to the public. If not, it's well worth looking at. - The impressive golden Phra Si Rattana Chedi, which it's claimed (somewhat improbably) houses ashes of the Buddha.

Just recently a group of villagers under official support revived rice farming in a learning center for younger generation to learn and appreciate the old way of life. Some foreigners including our reporter captured and experienced the harvest himself. Its four months since local farmers including our Thai reporter helped plant rice saplings in Mai Khao village of Phukets Thalang district. Now the 120 days golden Jasmin rice field signified its readiness to be harvested. Scythe is a vital tool for harvesting in Thailand. To promote the activity, the Phuket Governor Mr. Preecha Rungjan, who is from a farmers family, invited foreigners and residents to join with villagers to experience the rice harvesting themselves and catch some catfish in the muddy field for a fun contest. Participating foreign expat residents & tourist police volunteer Simon explained how he enjoyed the harvest and fish catching: An Italian woman resident & tourist police volunteer also felt the same enjoyment: 51.00.15-51.18.11 After cutting the rice grass from the rice field, they are stacked in the sun and then smashed to get the grain before sending to the rice mill machine. This is the community rice mill machine which can handle 12 tons of rice per day. The produce is consumed locally and some for sale to generate local income. The rice bran and leftovers will be utilized for organic manure or animal feed. This is an example of how to apply HM the Kings sufficiency economy. Promchote Traivate, Chief of Phuket Tourism & Sports Office, said the activity not only promoted unity among villagers but also showed visitors Thai traditional way of life: Preecha Rungjan, Phuket Governor, expects that the reviving of rice farming in Mai Khao of Phuket will at least help educate young people about the food they consume everyday. More over he expects the location and activity can be promoted as agro-tourism on a tourist resort island like Phuket. The rice farming had vanished from this village over 10 years ago and now realizes the value of the old tradition in the wake of the global economy crisis when people tend to come back to the original idea in reducing global warming trends, so the 20 rai plots here are designated as learning centres to educate young people. Being a resort island, the plot can also be an attraction for Phuket visitors who wish to learn local lifestyle as well.

This is a ferry in Thailand, as seen from the top deck of another ferry. The ferry that I was on was headed to Koh Chang (visible in background) whereas the ferry in the video was headed in the opposite direction towards the mainland. Koh Chang is an island in Southeastern Thailand near the Cambodian border, and is a popular tourist attraction because of the large national park it contains that is filled with lush tropical plants, and because of its great beaches.
